Registration for ApacheCon Europe 2006 is now open, and it currently looks like I won’t be there 
I’m really disappointed about this – it’s in Dublin this year, I have the time, but it’s just far too expensive.
Having no income, I had always planned on looking for some kind of sponsorship to cover the costs of attending the conference, but I was expecting the registration fee to be on the order of €120. Turns out, the early-bird registration is €889 for the conference, and €698 for the tutorials.
There is a hackathon, during which committers from all around the world get together to work on the various pieces of software – this bit is free. But add to ‘free’ the cost of travelling from, and returning to, a World Cup city (during the 2006 FIFA World Cup), which is coming in at around €315, and it still comes to more than my student budget can afford.
So, dear readers… Who has a sponsorship budget? I know there are a rake of companies in Ireland making money from Apache hosting – and of course, it’s not pure profit. But no one’s charging you a penny for the Apache webserver – and they sure would be if you were using IIS, or another commercial alternative. As an Apache committer, you get my work for free, and you can do anything you want with it. You can even rebrand it as Mypache, and sell it.
I am, to the best of my knowledge, the only student in Ireland committing to the Apache HTTPd project – and as far as I know, to any of the Apache Software Foundation projects – so you’re not going to get inundated with requests like this.
And of course, anyone who feels like sponsoring me – to attend the tutorials, the conference, or even just to get back to Dublin for the hackathon, will get full credit.
