Oranges and Lemons

So, for the last week I’ve had a nasty cold that just won’t shake. Yesterday, I got totally fed up with it, and went out to buy an orange juicer, and some fruit. I got 1kg of clementines and 3kg of oranges. The 1kg of clementines yielded 412g of (fairly, but not very, pulpy) juice – it didn’t taste as nice as I expected it to, but I drank it all, and lo’n behold, am feeling much better today. Cold is by no means gone – but my lungs have stopped rattling every time I breathe, and I’m no longer coughing up fluoro green/yellow gunk. Yay!

I mentioned this to dad, adding that Mr Hehir, my chemistry teacher in school, felt that vitamin C was, to put it politely, an expensive way of producing extra urine… One of dad’s professors, a biochemist, had felt the same, apparently – he said that the fish in Dublin Bay were being poisoned with vitamin C :)

Oh well, I don’t mind much – I feel a bit better, and that’s what counts!

Update: 940g of oranges produced 343g juice (365g/kg) – slightly less juicy than the clementines, slightly less pulpy, and muuuuch more yummy :)
And 1098g of oranges just produced 410g juice (373g/kg) – yummy, yummy!

  • I used 1 g C-vitamin tablets (dissolved in water), 4-5 times a day when I am about to get a cold. My theory is that it works by making the mucous membranes in the body more acidic and thus less prone to infections. A coworker had a laser surgery to his eyes, and was told to take high doses of vit C to avoid infectuions. So just continued drinking your oranges – and perhaps add some vit C tablets :-)

  • “an expensive way of producing extra urine…”

Nice, very nice. One of the best sentences I’ve read in a while. Beer is another very good, very expensive way to produce extra urine.
