Yesterday was Christi Himmelfahrt, which is a bank holiday here, so it was a relatively quiet day. I spoke to home, and had a bit of trouble explaining to my mum what holiday it was You see, I can never say the right word when I want to, when it comes to the [...] Ok, so it’s the end of the day – but I’ve had a fantastic one I had a conversation (super-brief) with Mark Shuttleworth… I’m starstruck! I got Val Henson invited to Limerick, where I may finally be able to meet her I had Marshmallow Fluff I got a job in the Multimedia Language Lab in the LMU, [...] Since I started studying linguistics in German, I’ve come to understand the concept of the “verbal complex”. Only too well. Boy, can it be complex. I’ve just read a sentence which had a five word verbal complex. To highlight how complicated this is, I can’t actually come up with one that’s more than three words in [...] So, I’ve had my first week back at college, gotten sick, gotten better, gotten drunk, gone to the Fruhlingsfest, and bought a book to get me started on my project. It all sounds a lot less impressive when you jam it all into one sentence like that. College was grand – English Functional Syntax seems interesting, and [...] So, this won’t be one of my usual (!) 1,000 word treatises – I’m writing it on my latest toy, the Palm TX. For this time of day, the airport is incredibly busy – there are queues for everything, moreso than normal, but everything’s moving, it all seems pretty efficient, and I haven’t had the [...] So, not for the first time in the land of high-speed internet, I find myself without internet access that I’ve paid for (yes, I pay for my connection – it’s one of the ‘Nebenkosten’ in my rent). I had some connectivity on Monday evening, and Tuesday & yesterday it seemed to work between about noon [...] I woke up this morning so stiff I couldn’t walk straight. I’m not sure how I was sleeping, but it must’ve been some seriously weird way. Several interesting things occurred to me during the day, almost all of which I have since forgotten. One that I didn’t forget was the various patron saints I was familiar [...] So, I’ve now successfully fixed all my time-telling devices (I think). This gives me, however, little joy, since I’ll be going to Germany tomorrow, and doing the whole thing over again. I’m not much looking forward to going there – I’m really not a fan of airports and all that jazz – but it’ll be [...] Monday was a quiet day – went to college, sorted out a Schein (didn’t get it, but it’ll be posted out to me, and I know the mark). Only one more Schein to collect, and that’s due next week sometime. We wandered around all the places we hadn’t yet been – the English Gardens, the [...] Hello from the posh lounge at Munich airport, about to board the plane now. More later on how I ended up here |
